Science writer Cy Tymony has developed a novel way for families to always have emergency items at hand in his latest book, “Sneakier Uses for Everyday Things.”

Each of us is at the mercy of unpredictable acts of man and nature everyday and you must not take survival and emergency services for granted. You may not be at home, where a prepared emergency kit could save the day. Most people would object to carrying a full array of emergency equipment. The solution? If wearing them in your clothing or other personal articles, you’d never be without essentials survival materials.

Author Cy Tymony stores emergency items in his “gadget jacket,” pen, watch, even his shoestrings. He shows how to adapt household items in his new book, “Sneakier Uses for Everyday Things” (Andrews McMeel Publishing).

“The most innocent objects, with a little knowledge, can be used for amazing, possibly life-saving purposes,” Tymony says. Among the items he carries in a pen or watch are: aluminum foil, dental floss, a needle and magnet (for a compass), duct tape, a watch battery and an LED light, antibacterial tablet, baggy (doubles as a cup) and breath mints for energy.

“It costs next to nothing to do so because we already have these items around the house, but if left there they won’t be at hand when out and about. In an emergency you don’t want to be without light, heat, clean water or a sense of direction,” Tymony adds.

A Minneapolis school has recently developed resourcefulness courses based on Cy’s first book “Sneaky Uses for Everyday Things.” “There are lots of items sitting around that can be used to save lives; the purpose of the book is to teach people how to expand their awareness of what is around them and to never give up,” the author explains.

Tymony’s books illustrate little-known resourceful techniques for survival situations including:

Making a radio with a penny

Surviving cold temperatures without a coat

Turning a balloon into a gas mask

Making fire with water

Crafting a compass without a magnet

Making an emergency signal whistle

Inflating a flat bicycle tire with paper

Converting an AM/FM radio to receive aircraft signals

Tymony continues to research real-life stories of resourcefulness which he then posts at his http://www.sneakyuses.com website. There you can read about the window washer who used his squeegee to save himself and five other men from World Trade Center Tower One on September 11, 2001 as well as the story of the Colditz glider, an 18-foot airplane built by prisoners in a German war camp out of materials from their beds and sleeping bags.

These days, “be prepared” applies to more than just the Boy Scouts. “Sneakier Uses for Everyday Things” provides dozens of practical ideas and solutions for dealing with life’s unexpected challenges.
